MAKING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS

Our mentoring programs are designed to build a better future for youth by helping them reach their full potential through the support of caring adults. Y–Mentoring supports youth who are in need of role models and who face pressures with family, school, and peers, among other social issues. We have two options for mentoring you can choose from. With the one-on-one mentoring you are able to spend as much time as you’d like with the mentee doing activities you choose. With our lunch buddies program you spend just less than an hour, having lunch, once a week, sharing conversations with your mentee.

WHY BECOME A MENTOR?

-Provide youth with a positive relationship.
-Be a solution to the problem.
-Have a direct impact on your local community.
-Make a difference in the life of someone in need.

ONE-ON-ONE MENTORING

-The Y-Mentoring Program matches youth at least 8 years of age, up to 17, with an adult who is at least 19 years of age for a period of at least one year.
-We make matches based on common interest and who we feel will fit well together.
-We ask that the partnership spend time together each week, engaging in activities of their choosing. How much time that they spend together, is up to them.
-We provide monthly activities for the partnership that are at no cost to the youth.
-The role of the mentor, called a senior partner, is to be a friend, an advocate, and a positive role model. They are not considered a teacher, a parent, a counselor or a tutor, just a friend.

Once the partnership reaches their year anniversary, they can either end the partnership or continue as Alumni’s, where they can still be involved with our program for as long as they desire, or until the youth turns 18. Most of our partnerships that make it to their year anniversary do become alumni’s. It is our hope that a lasting friendship develops, one that is built on trust, respect, and true friendship.

LUNCH BUDDIES MENTORING

-It’s an opportunity for adults to connect with middle school students just once a week, truly making a difference in their lives.
-The adults spend just less than an hour, having lunch, sharing in conversations they have in common and showing encouragement for success in school to the student they have been matched with.
-It’s a way to make a difference without having to invest a lot of time. Each adult is able to choose which weekday works best for them, which can change from week to week.
-This program was introduced at our YMCA back in 2002, and we have found it to be successful in helping middle school students feel better about themselves, get along better with their peers and teachers, and just generally feel better about school.

We currently are working with Calapooia, Memorial, and North Albany Middle Schools in Albany.
