LEARN TO SWIM

The YMCA has been teaching swimming lessons for over 100 years. We continue to uphold the tradition because it provides individuals the opportunity to enjoy the water, safely! Drowning is the leading cause of death in children age 1 – 5 yrs. To prevent drownings, we hold swimming lessons all year round, for anyone and everyone that wants to learn. The advantages of year round swimming lessons are the repetitions creating muscle memory, a healthy lifestyle, continuous growth and progress.

GROUP SWIMMING LESSONS

Our most popular option for learning to swim is our youth progression swimming lessons. Each session is a month long, a couple of nights a week, for a half hour. Registration opens the last week of the month for the upcoming month of lessons. Register online here or in the building. Each session also includes a Safety Day. This added lesson will teach kids how be act safely around water. Check out each level below:

PARENT-TOT (RECOMMENDED AGES 0-3)
Parent and children learn basic skills including kicking, floating, blowing bubbles, and basic holds. The goal is for both parent and child to become comfortable in the water. Children in Parent-Tot should be comfortable going under the water before moving to Preschool 1.
PRESCHOOL 1 (RECOMMENDED AGES 3-6)
Beginning swimmers who are not completely comfortable in the water. Children will work on bobs, floating, breath control, and body position in the water.
PRESCHOOL 2 (Swim Test Required)
Advanced beginners who are comfortable going under the water, bobbing, and floating. Children will work on front crawl, rolling on their back to breathe, safety skills, and begin backstroke.
Progressive 1 (Ages 7+)
Beginning swimmers who are not completely comfortable in water. Children will work on bobs, floating, breath control, and body position in the water. At Progressive level, children progress and master skills at a faster rate than Preschool level.
Progressive 2 (Swim Test Required)
Advanced beginners who are comfortable going under the water, bobbing, and floating. Children will work on front crawl, rolling on their back to breathe, safety skills, and begin backstroke.
Progressive 3 (Swim Test Required)
Intermediate swimmers will learn front crawl with side breathing, backstroke, breaststroke, and begin butterfly kick. Children will spend a significant amount of time improving their stroke to become more efficient swimmers in the water.
Progressive 4 (Pre-Swim Team)
Advanced Intermediate swimmers will improve stroke technique and learn elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and butterfly kick. Children will learn to build endurance for longer swim distances.

PRIVATE SWIMMING LESSONS

Sometimes it’s just easier with a one-on-one. We offer private swimming lessons upon request. To book a session, let the Welcome Center know you’re interested! Instructors will call you to set up a time that works for everyone.
